Meet Emily
@thatathensdoula
Hi there. I’m so glad you’re here!
My name is Emily. I’m a 30-year-old wife, mom and birth worker who recently moved to Athens, GA. I love the birth culture here and am so honored to come alongside all of the amazing women who have built this birth community from the ground up!
A little bit about me,
I love all things history, philosophy and faith.
I will choose outdoor seating every single time, regardless of the weather.
I like to play tennis, drink hot things and read memoirs.
And I love to laugh! I appreciate a well-timed pop culture reference or movie quote.
My love for birth began as a teen! I remember watching “The Business of Being Born” countless times and being amazed by this beautiful process and disappointed in a medical system that often failed to honor it. That led me all the way down the rabbit hole as I discovered just how flawed our American Maternity system is. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, it was also influencing the way I would approach my own first birth 7 years later.
When I was pregnant with my son, Judah, I found myself completely consumed by everything birth and baby! I was the first of my friends to have kids and was so excited for them to get pregnant so they would understand my passion! Then, one by one they did 🥰 But, much to my dismay, that had what I now know of as a “healthy interest” in the topic rather than whatever it was I experienced.
And then the craziest thing happened, I stopped having babies, and my love of this work and respect of this process only grew stronger.
I found myself drawn to women on their journey into motherhood. I wanted to walk beside them and help them navigate this beautiful but often difficult path.
At that point I realized that birth work was going to be my career. I accepted and leaned into the ways that it fit my personality and strengths and trusted I could grow in the ways it demanded I grow.
So, in the fall of 2023 I reached out to a local Midwife, Lindsey at Behold Birth, and started my journey to becoming a Doula. I completed my training through New Beginnings Doula training in 2024 and have been attending births and loving every minute of it since. ❤️
I love birth because - to steal a phrase from Call the Midwife - it’s the very stuff of life.
Within just a few days we come face to face with all the things that make us human- excitement, hope, faith, fear, strength, endurance, sometimes pain, and always love.
It’s impossible to walk away from this experience unchanged, but there can be some really vulnerable moments along the way. I love being there to support mothers on this incredible journey and help them fight for the experience they want.
Another aspect I love is teaching. I’m a thinker by nature, and I love helping people feel truly informed about their options so they can make decisions that align with their unique values.
Birth work stretches me because I’ve spent a lot of time over the years sitting in classrooms thinking about theories of how I would make the world a better place. This work allows me to shut the books and set my hands and feet to important work.
It just so happens to also be work that I love! I can’t imagine doing anything else.
